Ten Paths

Ten people. Ten completely different starting points. All of them ended up in apartments.

The thing I hear more than anything else is a version of the same sentence: my situation is different.

I'm too old to learn this. I was never good with numbers. I don't have nearly enough money. All the good deals get snapped up.

So I picked ten people and had them interviewed. Not by me — I asked my longtime friend and colleague Jonathan Rozek to do it, told him to ask whatever he wanted, and then stayed out of the editing completely.

A recovered addict who was living on the street. A woman who came here from Venezuela and was afraid of her own English. A music teacher from an Oklahoma farm. A mother who left a violent marriage and lived in her car with two small children.

They are not clones of each other. That was the entire point.
